Lamar County Information

Lamar is one of 254 counties in the state of Texas. It covers some 932 square miles. About 15 square miles of this is water.

Location   The County of Lamar is located in Northeast Texas on the Oklahoma border. About 100 miles northeast of Dallas. The center of Lamar County is located about 33°39´45" north longitude, 95°32´52" west longitude. That is pretty close to the intersection of Hwy 82 and 271.   Lamar is bordered by the counties of Choctaw and Bryan in Oklahoma and Red River, Delta and Fannin in Texas.   Major highways include U.S. Highway 82, U.S. Highway 271, State Highway 19 and State Highway 24. Government   The Texas Constitution makes counties functional agents of the state. At the heart of each is the Commissioners Court, headed by a County Judge. The Commissioners Court oversees the general business of the county. Courthouse   The current courthouse and County Seat is at 119 N Main St, Paris, Tx. 75460. Sheriff   The Sheriff's Office is located at 125 Brown Ave. Paris, Texas 75460. Climate and Weather If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.   We have our cold and hot times of the year, but the general climate is humid sub-tropical, according to the experts.   If you like the outdoors and a place that actually has seasons, you will probably like it here. The high in the summer is generally in the 90's and the low in the winter is normally above freezing. Of course, there are exceptions. :)

Education   Good education is always a concern. The County of Lamar, Tx. is served by Chisum, Fannindel, Honey Grove, North Lamar, Paris, Prairiland, and Roxton ISDs. Some of the districts serve only small parts of Lamar County. Check our "Resources by City" for the school system that serves the city you are interested in. College   For higher education there is the Junior College (PJC) to serve you. History   If you are interested in history, see our Lamar County History page for information. We have a great history and are sure you will enjoy reading about it. Public Transportation   Public Transportation in our area is covered by Ark-Tex Council of Governments (TRAX).
