Through Time

It should be noted that there is a community just southwest of Paris named Shady Grove. Toco is west of Paris. A small distance that might change a lot of information.Below is what I have found documented in various places online.

According to The Handbook of Texas Online, Toco was settled sometime before 1900 and was originally known as Shady Grove. During the mid-1930s Shady Grove had a church, a school, a cemetery, and a number of houses; several stores were also in the vicinity. Beginning around the 1970s, the community became known as Toco, though older locals still sometimes called the area Shady Grove. The stores and school closed after World War II, but later the number of residents increased.

According to some, Toco was founded because oilman and developer Bill Thompson wanted to open a liquor store in the then dry County of Lamar. This claim is desputed here. Apparently, Bill Thompson started the Thompson Oil Company, from which Toco took its name and became the Mayor. Bill died in 1983 and his son, Rocky, took over as mayor. The liquor store also doubles as the jail. A good way to keep the prisoners happy? :)

If you have noticed the plane on highway 82, here is a story about it.
